IDAHOBIT 2026

Melton City Council will recognise the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), at several workshops aimed at celebrating our LGBTQIA+ community. A series of street flags will also fly throughout Melton and Caroline Springs.

 

Observed annually on 17 May, IDAHOBIT seeks to raise awareness of discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ communities and to celebrate progress toward equality.

Polymer Pride Jewellery Workshop

Get creative and make your own wearable pride! In this free, beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll use polymer clay to design and create earrings, pins, or key rings inspired by rainbow and pride flag colours — or anything that reflects you.

Queer Canvas Embroidery Workshop

Express your creativity by putting paint to canvas before being guided to stitch powerful queer messages, symbols and designs that feel meaningful to you. You’ll walk away from this session with new artistic skills and an art piece worth displaying at your home.

Increasing LGBTQIA+ Inclusion | Professional Development for Service Providers

In this practical session, local service providers will upskill in critical support areas including understanding why inclusion matters, how to use inclusive language, and other strategies that can be applied in your work.

 

This session will be facilitated by Delsi (they/them), a queer, non-binary educator and LGBTQIA+ inclusion specialist with over 15 years of experience across community, education, and organisational change.

Free Community Led Workshops

To celebrate National Volunteer Week in 2025 (19-25 May), Melton City Council invited senior community members to express their interest in sharing their talents, wisdom and gifts with other community members. The project has been aptly named the ‘Gifts of Experience Project’. 

 

As a result of the community call out, you can now browse and book into several free workshops across the municipality including painting, Sudoku, fondant flower making, even an afternoon in-conversation session with a Hey Hey It’s Saturday! alumni!

Introducing Melton City Girls Can!

Melton City Council is proud to launch Melton City Girls Can (MCGC) in April 2025. MCGC will celebrate, support and create new opportunities for people who identify as women and girls in the City of Melton to participate in sport and active recreation.

 

Inspired by VicHealth’s This Girl Can campaign and delivered in partnership with local sports clubs and community groups, MCGC aims to enable women and girls to get active in ways that work for them. Whether it’s a little or a lot, what matters is moving your body and having fun – on your own terms, in your own way. Learn more about why Council supports this initiative on the main website.

Fair Access Workshops for Sports Clubs

Attend a Fair Access Workshop for your chance to win 1 of 6 $500 vouchers towards sporting goods for your club!

 

Melton City Council and GenWest are working together to deliver a series of workshops for leaders, coaches and decision makers at sports clubs, to help you understand

  • what policy changes have come into place,
  • what this means for your club,
  • how your club can support the prevention of gender based violence and
  • ways your club can be more inclusive for women and girls.

Following this, clubs will have the opportunity to express their interest in receiving free support from GenWest to develop tailored action plans to facilitate increased participation from women and girls.
