We’re celebrating Wear It Purple Day!

Wear it Purple Day is an annual LGBTIQA+ awareness day especially for young people, based in Australia. Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community.

The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Start the Conversation. Keep It Going!’ It focusses on the important conversations we have around sexual orientation and gender identity, and that it should not only be discussed today, but every day.

“Our rainbow youth exist in the world every day, and therefore require our support each and every day.” – Wear it Purple

City of Melton Young Communities is proud to co-facilitate ‘The Space’, a LGBTIQA+ youth social support group with Djerriwarrh Health Services. The group has put together conversation tips from their personal experiences, to support you for when you might have a rainbow conversation.

For more information on The Space and to download the LGBTIQA+ Conversation Tips in PDF, visit: www.melton.vic.gov.au/TheSpace

Free African drumming classes coming to Melton Central!

We are excited to let you know that our Council was one of five Victorian winners of the Heart Foundation’s Active Australia Innovation Challenge, attracting a $10,000 grant to run African drum classes for seniors! Melton residents will soon be moving to the beat of Africa thanks to this new program.

The African drums classes will be held at Melton Central Community Centre, where participants will learn djembe drum techniques and rhythm. The free program aims to promote fitness, co-ordination and fun, improve mental wellbeing and bring people together. The program is targeted at residents aged 45-70 years.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact these musical sessions will have on our community

The classes will begin in October and run until next August.

Lifelong Learning Festival postponed

Lifelong Learning Festival postponed

Melton City Council are excited to be bringing the City of Melton Lifelong Learning Festival back to the community in 2021, however, in light of the current Covid situation and with the safety of our community as our main priority, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the celebration at this stage.

One of the main objectives in delivering the festival is to welcome you, our community, into our community centres and libraries to engage in quality and engaging free lifelong learning opportunities that in turn result in meaningful connections made with others in your local area. With the uncertainty surrounding current lockdowns in metropolitan Melbourne, we feel it is in the best interest of the community to postpone the festival to ensure we are able to maintain the quality of these face-to-face and online events.

A rescheduled date will be announced in the coming months, we look forward to bringing you this news when we can. Join our mailing list via the festival page on this website now to be kept up top date with all festival news!

In the meantime, the Melton Learning Directory team will continue to provide free online content to you over on our YouTube channel and through our community centres via platforms like Zoom. You can stay up to date with all of our online content via our Facebook page, this website and YouTube channel.

Stay safe Melton.
